In late 2025, we launched an appeal to purchase seven new wheelchairs for distribution to individuals who had been prioritised because of their extreme needs. We are very grateful for all who donated. The pictures below show the first three about to be loaded into the Bethesda 4x4 to take to one of the villages and a delighted child in her new wheelchair enabling her to have some mobility at last. The demand is greater than we can currently supply so any further gifts would be well used.
Key items for your prayers:
For peace in the country and region with refugees fleeing the fighting in neighbouring DRC and a continuing border dispute with Rwanda
Give thanks for the success of the wheelchair appeal and that 22 monthly donors started giving in 2025 for the support of the team in their work
Incidences of children with malnutrition are very common. Our team have just been trained in a technique called Farming God's Way. After a successful trial on our own land growing maize, we plan to broaden the work to help families set up kitchen gardens and keep livestock in addition to our exisiing nutrition education. We are very thankful for the support of the Wadhurst Burundi Link and Anglican Aid for providing advice and funding for this area of the work.
The network of facilitators in each group of villages which was set up at the start of 2024 has been very successful at providing continuity of care and coordinating visits from the team. Two more joined recently - see below. We have recently had to double their monthly allowance due to the very high rate of inflation in the country.
Pray for the preparation of a visit from a team of experts from the UK in May. We are hoping to introduce a partner during the visit with expertise in setting up and running rural clinics in Africa. This follows a successful review and training visit in March 2026 by Bridget Hathaway - a nurse with much experience in rural Africa.
Give thanks for the dedication of the small team, their enthusiasm, teamwork and concern for the people.
To give an idea of the types of issues the team come across, here are the statistics for just one month - October 2024. It shows the huge range of challenges faced in the six villages they were able to visit.
Helping those who are suffering is just one part of the work. Teaching about the benefits of inclusion, the rights of children and disabled people and helping families towards self-sufficiency are, perhaps, even more important in the long term.
We pray that all might see the love of God for all children, women and men.
Facilitators are key to organising work effectively in the villages surrounding Muyinga. In June 2025, we added two new faciliators covering villages where there were previously none. Here they are with their Bethesda uniforms and umbrellas together with bicycles which were generously paid for by donations from supporters in the UK.
